Ahotsa eta kitarra akustikoetan oinarritutako musika bare eta soila. Mi eta L’au Parisen ezagutu ziren duela urte batzuk. Mi Finlandiarra da, eta L’au berriz Frantzesa. Elkar maitemindu eta Paristik Finlandiako basoetara joan ziren, eta hango etxetxo batean grabatu zuten beren lehendabiziko diskoa izango zenarentzako oinarrizko musika.
Ondoren New Yorken azken ikutuak eman zizkieten, zenbait lagunekin batera: Akron/Family, Antony and the Johnson-seko Julia Kent, Paul Cantelon, Jerome O’Brien bestean artean. Young God Recordsen kaleratu zen diskoa, 2005ean.

Europan zehar emanaldi askotako biran dira martxoa eta apirilean; Holanda, Belgika, Alemania eta Frantziatik pasa
ondoren iritsiko dira Azkoitira, 20an. Ondoren Portugal eta Espainian zehar ibili ondoren, Italia, Austria, Txekia, Alemania, Dinamarka…tik jarraituko dute.

Mi and L’au, pareja a escala sentimental y artística, comparten ahora, con este debut homónimo, un manojo de
composiciones surgidas desde el aislamiento, la soledad y la intimidad, su más profunda intimidad. Folk escuálido, de tendencias minimales, comatosas y ligeramente fúnebres arrancado a las entrañas de un bosque que, para ellos,
hace los papeles de morada.

Edulcoradas siempre por un regusto confesional, las canciones del dúo, resultan sinceras, francas y honestas, como nacidas por la necesidad de compartir, de transmitir inquietudes brotadas de miedos, de recelos, de experiencias y necesidades.

Para narrar estas historias, florecidas de jugar con sombras y arena, de contemplar botellas medio vacías, Mi y L’au, L’au y Mi, se ayudan de una instrumentación mínima, delicada y parsimoniosa, de cuerdas acariciadas con prudencia, de glockenspiels rebosantes de espacios, de los dulces susurros de Mi y el agrio musitar de L’au, de monotonías robadas a su cabaña, a su bosque, al tranquilo y perseverante crepitar del viento.

 Sorprende, sin embargo, lo accesible de su propuesta, concebida en Finlandia, pero distante de los dictámenes, o mejor dicho, de la falta de dictámenes de ese epicentro que es el sello Fonal.
Arraigada e inspirada en la tradición anglosajona, su música sabe mecernos sin sobresaltos, gratificarnos con
arreglos sumergidos, recordando en Burns, a los jardines en los que Virginia Astley se sentía segura, escociendo y arrinconando, en la rotunda y memorable “I’ve Watching You”, como solo los riachuelos de Nathan Admunson saben hacer, paralizando el tiempo, nuestro tiempo, con una sinceridad capaz de emocionar.

Their music is bare and austere, made with simple instrumentation – voice, acoustic guitars, and other very
sparse orchestrations.

 Mi and L’au met in Paris a few years back. Mi is Finnish and was working as a model to make ends meet and L’au (who’s French) was working in the music industry (soundtracks, I think). They fell deeply and immediately in love, and after a short period of moving from apartment to apartment in Paris, they gave everything up and decided to move to the woods in Finland, so they could be alone together in peace
and to spend their time discovering each other and their music. They live in a small cabin in complete isolation with the barest of essentials (except in the brutal Finnish winter, when they move to Helsinki) and they spend virtually all their time making music together in solitude. They are pure and gentle souls (Devendra’s song, from oh me oh my “gentle soul” was written for L’au, the two had met inParis when Devendra was wandering there, and L’au took him in, and they also made music together). Their music is bare and austere, made with simple instrumentation – voice, acoustic guitars, and other very sparse orchestrations. I wouldn’t say it compares at all to the current crop of neo hippy “weird folk” etc. It has the naked quality of certain early Nico recordings, or Chet Baker…soulful and elegant, without being touchy-feely or confessional. Their music reminds me of how one might imagine a winter Finnish landscape – haunting and pure.

 These recordings were made with love in Mi and L’au’s cabin in Finland and then overdubs were made in the wilds of Brooklyn by themselves as well as the ubiquitous Akron/Family, Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons), Paul Cantelon, Jerome O’Brien and others. Overdubs were made at Seizure’s Palace (Angels of Light. Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family) and mixed at Trout recording by Bryce Goggin (Phish. Pavement, Lemonheads, Angels of Light, Akron/Family etc.).
